Bailey
The American hybrid Kawakami imported in 1898 — parent of Muscat Bailey A and Black Queen, anchor of Japanese hybrid breeding
The Variety
Bailey is an American hybrid red grape variety, developed in the late 19th century in the United States. Its parentage involves Vitis labrusca (the foxy American native species) and Vitis aestivalis. The variety was bred for disease resistance and cold tolerance, making it well-suited to humid eastern American conditions and — as Kawakami discovered — to Japan.
Kawakami’s Import
Zenbei Kawakami imported Bailey to Iwanohara Vineyard in 1898, eight years after the founding of his estate. He recognized that pure European Vitis vinifera struggled in Japanese conditions, and he was looking for parent material that could contribute disease resistance to the cross-breeding program he had begun. Bailey was one of the most important imports.
As a Breeding Parent
Through the next four decades, Kawakami used Bailey extensively as a breeding parent. The most famous offspring:
- Muscat Bailey A (1927, cross #3986) — Bailey × Muscat Hamburg, Japan’s most-planted black grape
- Black Queen — Bailey × Golden Queen, deep-color high-acid red
Both varieties inherit their Japanese-climate adaptability primarily from Bailey, with the European parent contributing wine-quality character. Without Bailey, Kawakami’s breeding program would not have produced these breakthrough varieties.
As a Wine Grape
Bailey itself can be vinified, though it is rarely sold as a standalone variety. Its wines are simple, dark-colored, foxy-aromatic in the labrusca style — interesting historically but not competitive with the more refined crosses derived from it.
Why It Matters
Bailey’s importance is genealogical rather than vinous. As the parent of Muscat Bailey A (the country’s most-planted black grape) and Black Queen (a key blending variety), it underpins essentially all distinctive Japanese red wine identity. Tracing the genetic lineage of contemporary Japanese reds — even those made with Cabernet Sauvignon — almost always passes through Bailey somewhere.
