Yellow Magic Winery
Sumito Iwatani’s Yamagata estate — natural-wine specialist named for the YMO band, Delaware-focused, no-SO₂ orientation
The Producer
Yellow Magic Winery is the independent project of Sumito Iwatani (岩谷澄人), the former head brewer at Hitomi Winery (Shiga) who is widely regarded as Japan’s "father of nigori wine." The Yamagata-based estate represents Iwatani’s decades of natural-wine experience applied to a single concentrated project.
The name "Yellow Magic" references Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO), the pioneering 1970s–1980s Japanese electronic music group that pioneered global electronic genres while remaining distinctively Japanese. Iwatani’s naming choice signals his ambition to do something similar with wine — Japanese-rooted, internationally relevant, distinct from any imitation of European tradition.
Production
Yellow Magic Winery focuses on Yamagata Delaware as its primary variety, working with growers across Yamagata Prefecture (Yamagata is Japan’s largest Delaware-producing region). The estate’s style emphasizes:
- No sulfite addition — strict natural-wine commitment
- Indigenous-yeast fermentation — wild yeasts from grape skins
- Unfiltered, unfined — drawing on Iwatani’s nigori expertise from Hitomi
- Skin-contact and orange wine — Delaware lends itself well
The wines have a strong following among Tokyo natural-wine specialists and have begun exporting to small allocations in Paris, New York, and London.
Why It Matters
Yellow Magic represents a contemporary Japanese natural-wine identity that is fully formed: trained for decades, methodologically clear, working with indigenous-leaning grape material (Delaware), with a confident cultural framing (the YMO reference). It is not a producer building toward something — it arrived already-formed, in the same way YMO arrived already-formed in 1978.
