Sorachi
Inland Hokkaido — 10R Winery’s home and the engine room of Japan’s natural-wine generation
The Place
Sorachi is the central Hokkaido sub-region wedged between the Ishikari Plain and the Yūbari mountains, roughly 40 kilometers northeast of Sapporo. The area’s anchor city is Iwamizawa (岩見沢市). Climate here is more continental than maritime Yoichi — colder winters, hotter summers, more diurnal variation, and somewhat more humidity than the coast. The growing season is short but intense; soils mix volcanic ash, peat, and alluvial deposits from the Ishikari River basin.
The 10R Effect
Sorachi’s contemporary identity is inseparable from 10R Winery, the custom-crush facility opened by Bruce and Ryōko Gutlove in Iwamizawa in 2012. Roughly 35 winemakers have launched their own labels through 10R’s incubator program over the past decade. Many of those alumni stayed in Sorachi or nearby — meaning the prefecture’s natural-wine community is largely a 10R diaspora.
Anchor producers include 10R itself, Kondō Vineyard (Ryōsuke Kondō, internationally followed natural producer), Tāp Wineworks, and a steadily growing roster of younger estates. The combination of cool inland climate, custom-crush capacity, and a peer network of recent graduates has made Sorachi the second great Hokkaido wine zone alongside Yoichi.
Climate and Style
Sorachi tends to produce wines that are slightly more structured and earthier than Yoichi’s — more red fruit and savory complexity than the lifted lean-Pinot register the coast is known for. Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Kerner, Zweigelt, and a meaningful amount of indigenous-leaning hybrid work all happen here.
Why It Matters
If Yoichi is the showcase, Sorachi is the laboratory. The structural innovation that has shaped the modern Hokkaido scene — the custom-crush incubator model — happened here. The natural-wine community that defines Hokkaido’s international identity is largely Sorachi-trained.
