Le Bois Dieu, “The God of Wood”, was established in 2015 by Salma Cassam Chenaï and Frédéric Thiry, two Swiss nationals who moved to the commune of Semur-en-Brionnais, an hour west of Macon on the eastern side of the Loire River. They acquired a few acres of old vines lost in the middle of vast dairy pastures: rare descendants to a vineyard that covered nearly 4,000 hectares before being devastated by phylloxera. The wines of Le Bois Dieu are spectacular: harmonious reds with subtlety and finesse and powerful whites with extended aging. For their red wines, Salma and Frederic focus on delicate and light extraction methods, avoiding punch-downs and pump-overs altogether. Fermentations and élevage take place in stainless steel, foudre and amphora, depending on the cuveé. For the white wines, Chardonnay is harvested when fully ripe and aged for a long time, up to two years in used oak barrels for cuvées like L’or du Soir. Pro
