The Producer

Katsunuma Jyōzō (勝沼醸造) was founded in 1937 by Yoshizane Aruga in Katsunuma, Yamanashi. The Aruga family had been silk farmers — Yoshizane started winemaking as a side enterprise that grew in importance over subsequent decades. In 1941 the nearby "Kanayama Grape Wine Cooperative Brewery" was founded; it merged into Katsunuma Jyōzō in 1954, expanding the estate’s production base.

Third-generation Yuji Aruga (有賀雄二) took over leadership in 1999. His decision was to commit the estate fully to Koshu specialization — a bet that the indigenous variety, properly handled, could be the basis for a world-class Japanese fine-wine identity. The bet has paid off.

Aruga Branca

In 2004, Yuji Aruga launched the premium Aruga Branca brand. The line covers four cuvées:

  • Aruga Branca Clareza — entry expression of dry Koshu
  • Aruga Branca Iseri — a single-vineyard cuvée
  • Aruga Branca Pipa — barrel-fermented Koshu
  • Aruga Branca Brilhante — traditional-method sparkling Koshu

The Pipa cuvée won silver at Vinalies Internationales 2003 — one of the first international competition wins for dry Koshu and a watershed moment for the variety’s credibility.

Current Leadership

The estate is now run by three Aruga brothers — Yutaka, Jun, and Sho — each with distinct roles. The third-generation continuity, combined with Yuji Aruga’s ongoing influence, has kept the estate’s Koshu-specialization commitment intact.

Why It Matters

Aruga Branca is the producer that demonstrated, alongside Grace Wine, that single-variety Koshu specialization can produce internationally serious fine wine. Where Grace built its case through methodical site selection and Decanter recognition, Aruga Branca built its case through methodological diversity within Koshu — sparkling, barrel-fermented, single-vineyard, late-harvest. Together the two estates established the conceptual range of contemporary Koshu fine wine.
