Life

Yuji Aruga (有賀雄二) was born in 1949 in Katsunuma, Yamanashi, into the founding family of Katsunuma Jyōzō (founded 1937 by his grandfather Yoshizane Aruga). He took over leadership of the estate as third-generation proprietor in 1999.

His major decision was to commit the entire estate to single-variety Koshu specialization — a bet that the indigenous variety, properly handled, could be the basis for an internationally serious Japanese fine-wine identity. Where many Yamanashi producers diversified into European varieties through the 1990s and 2000s, Aruga took the opposite path: maximum focus on Koshu.

Aruga Branca

In 2004, Aruga launched the premium Aruga Branca (アルガブランカ) brand for his most ambitious Koshu cuvées. The line covers four primary expressions: Clareza (entry dry Koshu), Iseri (single-vineyard), Pipa (barrel-fermented), and Brilhante (traditional-method sparkling).

The Aruga Branca Pipa cuvée won silver at the French Vinalies Internationales competition in 2003 — one of the earliest international competition wins for any Japanese wine, and the first for dry Koshu specifically. The recognition validated Aruga’s specialization bet and helped establish Koshu as a credible international category.

Influence

Aruga has been one of the most articulate advocates for the "Koshu can be world-class" position. He has spoken at international wine conferences, hosted overseas master classes, and worked alongside the Koshu of Japan promotional initiative since its 2009 founding. His contemporaneity with Shigekazu Misawa (Grace Wine) and Ayana Misawa as the public faces of serious Koshu has been a critical factor in the variety’s international profile.

The estate continues to be family-run; Aruga’s nephews — Yutaka, Jun, and Sho — manage day-to-day operations while Aruga remains involved in strategic and ambassadorial roles.

Why He Matters

Yuji Aruga is one of the four or five most important figures in modern Koshu — alongside Shigekazu and Ayana Misawa (Grace), the late Usuke Asai (Mercian), and Yuji Hosaka (the current Mercian Koshu winemaker). Aruga’s specific contribution was the demonstration that Koshu specialization, taken to its full logical conclusion, is commercially viable as a fine-wine category.
