The Producer

Iizuna Wine (飯綱ワイン) is a small-scale Nagano-prefecture wine producer based in the Iizuna area — a mountainous district north of Nagano City, separate from the Chikumagawa Wine Valley to the south. The estate operates outside the formal sub-region designations of GI Nagano (Chikumagawa, Northern Alps, Tenryū) and falls within the broader "Nagano area" residual GI category.

Geography

Iizuna sits at meaningful elevation — typically 600–900 m — in the foothills of Mt. Iizuna (1,917 m). The climate is more continental and cooler than the Chikumagawa river-terrace zone, with shorter growing seasons but distinctive terroir characteristics: well-drained mountain soils, significant diurnal variation, and very different exposure profile from the more-populated valley sites.

Production

The estate works at small scale with a mixed varietal portfolio adapted to the elevation and climate:

  • Pinot Noir (suited to cool elevation)
  • Chardonnay
  • Aromatic whites (Riesling, Müller-Thurgau)
  • Heritage hybrids in some plantings

The wines are oriented toward local distribution — Nagano-area restaurants, regional retail, direct-to-consumer — rather than national-market presence.

Position

Iizuna Wine represents the diversity of GI Nagano production beyond the celebrated Chikumagawa Wine Valley cluster. The prefecture has wine production scattered across many sub-regions and elevation profiles; Iizuna is part of the broader picture that GI Nagano covers.

Why It Matters

Iizuna Wine demonstrates that GI Nagano includes meaningful production outside the formal sub-region designations. The "broader Nagano area" category in GI Nagano isn't a residual but a genuine wine-producing region in its own right, with estates like Iizuna producing distinctive higher-elevation wines. Understanding Iizuna helps illustrate the full breadth of Nagano's wine identity.
