The Producer

Takahata Winery (高畠ワイナリー) was founded in September 1990 as a 100% subsidiary of Nankyū Coca-Cola Bottling Co., established to manufacture and market wine using grapes grown in Yamagata Prefecture. The corporate origin is unusual — most Japanese wineries are family operations or food-industry diversifications — but the structural backing of a major beverage company allowed the winery to invest at scale from day one.

The corporate precursor: Nankyū Coca-Cola had been operating "Ōta Grape Wine" in Shiojiri City (Nagano), but the residential location had become constraining. The license was transferred to a new facility built in Takahata Town, southern Yamagata.

The Takahata Region

Takahata Town has a much longer wine-related history than the winery itself. Grape cultivation began here in 1877 (Meiji 10) with European varieties planted in Tokisawa Village. After Delaware was successfully transplanted from Yamagata City in 1907 (Meiji 40), the area became Japan’s largest Delaware-producing region. Takahata Winery thus inherited a century-plus of grape-cultivation heritage when it opened in 1990.

Production

Takahata is now Tohoku’s largest winery by volume. The portfolio covers:

  • Delaware — the regional historical specialty, both still and traditional sparkling
  • Bordeaux varieties — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay (the European-variety pioneering line)
  • Yamabudou and crosses — local indigenous-leaning bottlings
  • Premium "Takahata Reserve" cuvées — top-of-line single-vineyard wines

Role in GI Yamagata

Takahata Winery was the institutional anchor of the GI Yamagata application that led to the prefecture’s 2021 designation. The estate’s decades of European-variety pioneering provided the production-scale evidence that Yamagata had a credible serious-wine identity beyond Delaware.
